Pope Francis has called for a global show of strength to end the many conflicts in a new interview. “We are experiencing a world war in installments,” the church leader said in the interview with Argentina’s state news agency Telam, published Monday evening (local time), according to Kathpress.
Francis stated that a dialogue must be conducted from a global perspective rather than just a national one; “this is why I speak of universal dialogue, universal harmony, and universal encounter.” The antithesis of this, of course, is war, he said. He said there have been wars everywhere since the end of World War II until today. “This has led me to say that we live through a world war in installments,” Telam said. The interview was recorded in late September, before the radical Islamic Hamas attack on Israel.
“Messianic clowns”
The pope also commented indirectly on the upcoming presidential elections in his native Argentina. Without naming radical market liberal candidate Javier Milei, Francis warned against “messianic clowns” who promise quick solutions. “Sometimes boys and girls cling to miracles, to a messianic solution to things,” Francis said. But there is only one messiah, he said; “the others are all messianic clowns.” The 86-year-old said that occasionally makes him think of characters like the Pied Piper of Hamelin, who charmed people with his flute playing before drowning them.
Milei had criticized Francis severely on several occasions. He accused the pope, for example, of not condemning the left-wing dictatorships in Latin America enough. Elections in Argentina will be held on Sunday. According to polls, Milei leads narrowly over Peronist government candidate Sergio Massa and conservative challenger Patricia Bullrich.
